Plenty of women learn to drive in their twenties, thirties and beyond, and in Queensland a few rules work in your favour once you're 25. You don't have to complete the 100-hour logbook, and if you pass your test at 25 or older you go straight to a P2 licence. You still need to hold your learner licence for at least a year.
Here's what to expect and how to make it work around a busy life.
You're in good company
Women learn to drive as adults for all sorts of reasons: a new job, a move to Brisbane, children who need getting to school and sport, a partner who used to do the driving, or simply deciding it's time. There's no "too late" to learn.
What's different at 25 and over
- No compulsory logbook. Learners 25 or older don't have to complete the 100-hour logbook. The Queensland Government still recommends keeping one, and it's a useful way to track your progress.
- You still hold your learner licence for a year. The 1-year minimum applies at every age.
- You still pass the hazard perception test before booking your practical test.
- You go straight to P2. If you're 25 or older when you pass, you get a P2 licence instead of a P1. See our P plates guide for the rules.
Without a logbook, how much practice is enough?
Not having a set number of hours is freedom, but it also means it's up to you to be ready. There's no magic number of lessons. Be honest with yourself: can you handle busy roads, roundabouts, merging, parking and night driving calmly, without your supervisor stepping in? Your instructor will tell you when you're test ready.
Fitting lessons around work and family
- Lessons that come to you. We can pick you up from home or work, so there's no extra travel.
- Weekday and weekend times. Easy L runs lessons 7 days a week, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm.
- Longer lessons. A 2-hour lesson (our Confidence Boost, $165) gives you time to settle in and practise more without squeezing in two separate sessions.
- Packs to keep momentum. 5 or 10 lessons booked over a few weeks keep skills building steadily.
Learning with a female instructor
Some women simply feel more relaxed learning with another woman, especially if they're nervous or have had a difficult experience learning before. Easy L is a women-only driving school: all our instructors are women with more than 20 years' experience in automatic cars. If nerves are your biggest hurdle, read our tips for nervous learner drivers.
